An ongoing research experiment developed by three researchers, First Responders allows security enforcement users to run and control surveillance equipment on their mobile phones across multiple viewers, allowing them to communicate while watching the stream. RC4 built the system using Sony IPELA cameras, Android devices and a server.
Designed and developed under high security precautions, the system allows first responders with the application to tag points of interest and quickly switch between cameras by selecting a particular region or road on Google Maps.
The project took over a year of research and development and is currently in the support phase with the client. First Responders is currently in use at MetScan and has interested many groups including the Toronto Police Department. Ryerson is currently working with MetScan to commercialize the product — an outcome of research and experiential learning that RC4 is hoping to make more commonplace in the future.
